Old Indian PictureI grew up in a rural area in West Texas in the 1960's. My father had an interest in Native American Culture, and he often took me for long walks in the country, searching for arrowheads, spear points, and manos (grinding stones). We loved to collect these artifacts, and as we found these items, we dreamed of the men and culture that had produced them. I can remember finding an arrowhead, and then imagining how it had come to end up in that spot. These are some of the fondest memories from my childhood. I continue to enjoy studying Native American History, and collecting artifacts and photographs of these First Americans. I particularly enjoy collecting and displaying vintage photographs. These photographs capture the character and dignity of these proud people. Among my favorite images are the hand tinted photographs shown below, created in about 1900. They were taken in black and white, and then hand colored by an unknown artist. The hand tinted colors really bring the photographs to life.
